Community Service Report
The
community service activity I decided to participate in is called Kean Dance
Marathon (KMD). It was an event hosted by Kean University Greek Senate, which main
purpose was to celebrate fundraising efforts from students that are encouraged
to help kids from the Children Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ. It
caught my attention because at this event we were going to be able to interact
with kids with some special health challenges and because the purpose of rising
money was for a good cause that will definitely benefit these children. Also
the crazy amount of money that they have raised in the last three years it’s
incredible, the amount is $123,000 and they look forward to double it every
year thanks to different sponsors such as fraternities, sororities, and active
clubs that are becoming part of this good cause.
Serving
the community is certainly an activity that makes me feel as a responsible
citizen. I believe it is not an obligation. However, I do believe we should
consider certain activities as human responsibilities which main purpose is to
help protect the environment, provide some type of help to those people that
need the most, show appreciation to those people in hospitals, support
different fundraising events etc. I personally been serving my community for
almost 2 years now. It all started because of a car accident and I was told by
a judge to do one year of community service. Throughout this period I noticed
that we all can make a huge impact on different things, at the end of the day
it is something that will teach you a lesson, and will change your mind on
different aspects, especially when it comes to activities related to the
environment because I noticed that we do so much damage to the earth when we
throw garbage in a lake, when we waste energy, water, and other things that
should not happen and could be prevented.
During
this event, I was able to talk to some of the kids and also to their families.
They are very inspirational and showed that nothing matters when you have faith
and courage to succeed in life. I helped in three different tables. In the
first one, I helped to sale cupcakes, all the money was for the hospital. In
the second one, I was just listening to some advices and health cares that a
staff member was saying to the parents and other people that was interested in
learning. One of the things that I can associate with this class is how the
environment is immensely affecting these kids. There were only a few kids at
the event because the other ones couldn’t be exposed to be outside. Too much
contamination affect their lungs and makes it difficult for them to breath.
Garbage, smoke, carbon emissions and other elements are definitely not
contributing to their process of healing. And last but not least, I was
conducting different games such as jeopardy, and Jenga.
It
is really devastating to see all these kids going through these situations but
I learned that we all can make a change even with no money. By not
contaminating the environment, we are helping them tremendously and giving them
the opportunity to go out and enjoy a safe atmosphere. I also would like to mention
that I am a member of the Global Business Club, and we organize different
events in order to raise money for kids at the Saint Jude Children’s Research
Hospital. I personally will be encouraging everyone to help these kids and also
promoting different ways on how we can help them. If you would like to donate,
